Energy supplier switches on the rise

According to the latest figures from Energy UK, nearly half a million consumers switched energy
supplier in August this year – a 30% increase from this time last year. These record-breaking
switching stats bring the total to 3.5 million switches this year.

This figure can be attributed to a 12.5% price increase announced by British Gas on 1 August and this
radical switching behaviour is anticipated to continue into September, as consumers endeavour to
avoid the increase which comes into effect on 15 September. Energy UK reports a 37% switch from
large to small suppliers, with 36% from one large supplier to another. 27% of switches took place
away from small suppliers. These figures are over and above consumers who switched to better
tariffs with their existing supplier.

This consumer behaviour highlights the competitive landscape occupied by energy suppliers in a
rapidly evolving industry, with the desire amongst consumers being to shop around for better deals
and potential cost saving.
