Non-domestic water switching reaches 100,000
The latest non-household switching figures from Market Operator Services Ltd (MOSL) are in, reflecting that around 30 000 switches have been made in the last quarter. This brings the total number of switches in the past ten months to over 100 000 since the water retail market was launched in April last year.
Ofwat has stated that this is indicative of businesses taking advantage of the open water market and the figures can be viewed as encouraging. However, the figures can be considered a starting point in being representative of market health with great scope for development within the market in future – an opinion echoed in a statement by Utilitywise, who have also suggested a new approach by Ofwat in order to achieve true market success.
Ofwat has made it clear that customers stand to save on their water bills through water efficiency measures and interaction with suppliers for reduced costs – and this was one of the main aims of opening the market. Over time, it is hoped that increased consumer confidence will contribute to the overall health of the market.
With so many non-domestic customers switching retailers, it is clear that many businesses stand to benefit from savings, service, and the selection of the right package. It has been opined that SMEs are particularly inactive in taking steps to explore their options within the market – and understandably so, considering the time constraints on these types of enterprises.
